Extraordinarily Badass Agile Coaching - Robert Galen

CoLab Book Club - October 2023

"Extraordinarily Badass Agile Coaching" by Robert Galen was this month's choice for #CoLabBookClub and was another winner of the #CompulsoryReading big tick.

Overview

This book helps to alleviate the confusion of what agile coaching is. It provides coaching insights and techniques, and promotes key themes including servant leadership, systems thinking, scaling agile, dealing with organisational resistance, and transforming culture. It draws on a wealth of wider coaching knowledge and has a particular focus on the Agile Coaching Growth Wheel as a competency and skill maturity model.

Our Key Takeaways

✔️ We appreciated the emphasis that professional coaching is only part of the toolkit and that the broad range of skills are needed to be an effective agile coach.
✔️ We enjoyed the real life stories and practical advice from Bob's extensive coaching experience.
✔️ We found the practical tools for journaling and self-reflection very valuable.
✔️ We agreed that the book wasn't a casual read but needed time to absorb and explore the ideas.
✔️ We loved the Agile Coaching Growth Wheel and are all off to do the self-assessment to discover our strengths!

Who is it For?

Although often referenced as a great read for experienced agile coaches looking to become "badass" agile coaches, we felt any new-to-intermediate agile coaches would also benefit hugely from the book. We also felt it would provide clarity to those looking to engage an agile coach.
