Making Work Visible - Dominica DeGrandis

CoLab Book Club - March 2024

We had another great #CoLabBookClub this month discussing Dominica DeGrandis's "Making Work Visible". As advocates of Kanban, we believe it is a great resource for helping teams better visualise work, identify bottlenecks, and implement supporting techniques provided to resolve and support teams to be high performing.

Overview

Making Work Visible is a very helpful introduction to topics like utilisation, WIP reduction, and unplanned work. It focuses on the 5 Thieves of Time and provides techniques to identify and resolve them.

Our Key Takeaways

✔️ We found the book's style to be approachable and accessible.

✔️ We agreed with all of the #ThievesOfTime and have seen them too many times.

✔️ We felt it was a good reminder of key Kanban principles and thought it brought a lot of key concepts together well.

✔️ We enjoyed the practical guidance in each chapter and the exercises provided for workshops.

✔️ We liked being reminded that we shouldn't start work we can't or never intend to finish!

✔️ We loved all the good quotes, including this one "It’s hard to manage invisible work. With invisible work, we don’t notice the explicit reminders that our mental budget is already full. There is not time to simply think."

Who is it For?

This book is essential reading for anyone involved in managing work with one or multiple teams.
